WE SERVE OUR MOST VULNERABLE NEIGHBORS
Our work consists of meeting tangible needs for our neighbors in need- those who find themselves in the gap of care in our county, with few or no resources available for them. According to the Ventura County Bureau of Statistics, seniors, veterans, those with disabilities, and those living in poverty make up a disproportionate amount of our population. We believe we can change these statistics by fostering a community of neighbors that take care of another.
Our Targeted Initiatives
LOW-INCOME SENIORS
Seniors 65+ are the fastest-growing demographic in Ventura County, and 8% live below the poverty level. While most want to age in their homes, many live alone and can’t take care of themselves on their own. By meeting their critical needs that improve their well-being and safety, we keep our seniors safe in their homes and create restorative relationships within the neighborhood.
VULNERABLE FAMILIES
9% of families live below the poverty level and are at risk of remaining in the cycle of poverty. Basic benefits cannot cover all that families need. Some have been impacted by the loss of a loved one and now parent alone. Or they had a medical emergency, and are now indebted by hospital bills. When our volunteers connect to these families, we meet spiritual needs as well as physical ones.
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
Almost one-third of Ventura County’s population are people living with one or more disabilities, and the majority are seniors. Persons with a disability are more likely to live in poverty compared to their neighbors. We tackle their accessibility needs so that they can remain mobile, independent, and safe at home. And all of our projects are completed at no cost to those struggling financially.
COMMUNITIES IN NEED
Economic disparity and invisible poverty exist within Ventura County- but these issues are deeply pervasive in under-served cities. Tackling these issues has always been a challenge for lack of resources, but we have found that by linking arms with the churches, agencies, schools, and businesses already serving these neighborhoods we combine our efforts and deepen our impact!
Judy’s Story
Judy lives alone, and she relies solely on social security and disability benefits for income. Because of this, she cannot always afford to hire someone for the clean-up and repairs she needs around her mobile home. Since her HOA requires certain maintenance standards, Judy is often at risk of being fined- which would only send her deeper into the cycle of poverty.
Thankfully, she doesn’t have to worry about that, because ACTION VC volunteers complete the needed yard work and repairs around Judy’s home! The care and connection from our volunteers keep Judy safe, healthy, and cared for.
